Using HTML Resource Indexes Alongside XML Sitemaps

An XML sitemap is a discovery file for search engines. An HTML resource index is a page for people who need a useful route through a collection of guides. A store can benefit from both, but they solve different problems. Do not turn an HTML index into a dump of every URL.

How to make the decision

Use the following sequence for a UAE English-language business. Keep a copy of the inputs and the reason for each decision so a later reviewer can reproduce it. The right answer depends on the actual offer, audience and data available; the example is a planning exercise, not a claimed Megvi client outcome.

Step What to do
Choose a reader task Group resources around real decisions such as store setup, product discovery and measurement. Use labels a visitor would recognize, rather than a list of file names or dates.
Keep the XML file machine-readable Include canonical, indexable URLs in the XML sitemap and submit its location through normal discovery routes. A resource index does not replace it.
Link through the content graph Connect the index to relevant guides; connect those guides onward to a service hub or a more specific answer. A link belongs where its context helps the next decision.
Review changes When a guide is retired, merged or redirected, update its index entry and check the destination. Do not preserve a link merely to keep the index long.

Worked example

Illustrative link map: a “Store SEO” resource index links to a category architecture guide, which links to the ecommerce SEO service. The XML sitemap independently lists the canonical URLs for the index, guide and service. A 404 guide is removed or replaced after editorial review; it is not hidden in a large index.

Where this approach can fail

An HTML index cannot force indexing. A URL still needs a crawlable link, accessible content and an indexable canonical response. If a resource has no obvious reader task, improve its placement in a relevant guide before creating a new directory entry.

Review checklist

Test one route as a visitor: index → guide → service. Check that the anchor describes the target, each page loads, the guide remains current, and the XML sitemap contains the intended canonical URL.

Ask an owner to confirm the inputs and assumptions before using this method to change a live campaign, customer record or product recommendation. Keep the original version of any measurement or creative asset so the next review can separate what changed from what only appears to have changed.

What to do next

For the route from a guide into store categories and products, read internal linking for ecommerce. If you need help applying the method to a live account or store, explore Megvi’s SEO services and bring the current page, campaign or data flow plus the result you want to improve.
