Internal linking is a navigation decision. It should help a shopper move from a broad need to a useful product choice, and it should make important pages easy for crawlers to find. Adding links to every page is not a substitute for choosing clear routes.
Draw the core path
Start with the store’s main category, its subcategories and the products that best represent each group. First map search intent across categories and products so each linked page has a distinct job. Add guide pages where they answer a real choice question. A fit guide might link to the relevant category, while a product page might link to a compatible accessory or a returns explanation.
Use visible, descriptive anchors
Write links in ordinary HTML with words that describe the destination. Google’s link guidance emphasizes crawlable anchors and useful anchor text. A link called “red running shoes” tells a shopper more than “click here.” Check that the link appears in the rendered page, not only in a script or spreadsheet.
Audit for gaps and excess
Export or crawl the key URLs and flag valuable products with no relevant incoming links. Then inspect crowded pages where repeated links obscure the main decision. A simple illustrative map of category → subcategory → product → sizing guide is more useful than an automated web of unrelated cross-links. Review links after product retirement and category changes.
Worked decision example
Illustrative link map: a guide about selecting a watch strap links to the relevant strap category. The category links to its important material subcategories, and each subcategory links to available products. A product page links back to compatible accessories only where that helps the choice. This route gives a shopper a next decision and gives crawlers a path. Inspect the rendered page after edits: a planned link in a spreadsheet does not help if it never appears in HTML.
Practical review checklist
- Can a user reach priority products from a relevant category?
- Do guide links answer the next decision?
- Are anchors descriptive and working?
