Marketing ROI is useful only when the numerator and denominator describe the same decision. State which costs are included, what revenue is verified and whether the figure is gross revenue or contribution after fulfilment. Then show a range instead of a single optimistic return.
Decision framework
| Step | Practical check |
|---|---|
| Define the unit | Choose campaign, channel or customer cohort and a fixed time window. |
| Gather costs | Include media, fees, production and any variable cost needed for the business decision. |
| Verify outcome | Use paid orders or accepted deals, adjusting refunds and cancellations. |
| Run scenarios | Calculate base, lower and upper outcomes with the same cost definitions. |
How to make the decision
For a planning calculation, ROI equals (return minus cost) divided by cost. Write down whether return means revenue, gross profit or contribution, because those are different answers. If the team cannot trace an order to the relevant campaign, present the calculation as a scenario rather than actual marketing ROI. Keep a missing-data row visible instead of silently treating an unknown cost as zero.
Worked example
Illustrative UAE store: AED 12,000 media plus AED 3,000 management and AED 1,000 creative equals AED 16,000 spend. Verified campaign-associated sales total AED 28,000, but product and fulfilment costs are AED 13,000. Contribution before marketing is AED 15,000, giving an illustrative contribution ROI of (15,000 – 16,000) / 16,000 = -6.25%. A revenue-only calculation would overstate the result.
What can change the answer
Attribution is an estimate of credit, not a perfect causal allocation. A range or controlled test is more honest when cross-channel effects matter.
Review checklist
- Is every cost included or explicitly excluded?
- Does the return use verified, net outcomes?
- Is the formula and time window visible to a reviewer?
Common question
Can a ROAS calculator show profit?
Only if the required margin and other costs are included; ROAS alone compares attributed revenue with media spend.
