A multilingual XML sitemap needs more than valid XML. Each localized URL needs its own entry, and that entry must list the same full set of alternates, including itself. Test the sitemap against the live pages so an old export does not keep pointing at removed languages.
Decision checklist
| Step | Practical check |
|---|---|
| Parse the file | Check XML syntax, namespace and absolute loc URLs. |
| Build variant groups | Group each page with its true translated or regional equivalents. |
| Check reciprocity | Compare the xhtml:link set on every member of a group. |
| Check live URLs | Request each loc and alternate, then inspect status and canonical. |
How to apply it
Export the sitemap and create a small table with loc, hreflang code and alternate URL. Google requires one url element per variant and a full alternate set in each. Check for country-only codes, swapped paths, redirects, 404s and localized pages that canonicalize to another language. A sitemap submission is a discovery hint, so use Search Console to inspect processing and selected URLs; it cannot prove that every page will be indexed.
Worked example
Synthetic group: /en-ae/service/ and /ar-ae/service/ each have a sitemap row. The English row lists both; the Arabic row lists only itself. The pair fails the reciprocity check. The developer regenerates the Arabic row, then the reviewer requests both live URLs, confirms 200 and self canonicals, and validates the corrected XML. The result is a reproducible test, not a claim of a live site audit.
Limits to keep in mind
Do not add alternates for untranslated pages just to complete a matrix. If an XML sitemap and HTML annotations disagree, choose one maintainable source of truth before rollout.
Review checklist
- Is xhtml declared in the sitemap?
- Does every variant list itself and all true equivalents?
- Were responses and canonicals tested after generation?
Common question
Should one sitemap row list the whole group only once?
No. Google describes a separate url entry for each URL, each with the full alternate set.
