A useful website brief describes the operating store, not only the desired look. A brief also makes agency proposals easier to judge; use our ecommerce development partner checklist to compare proof, ownership and handover. It gives the agency enough information to estimate scope and gives the owner a way to judge delivery. Start with the customer journey and the internal processes that must work on launch day.
Describe the business and catalog
State the target buyers, product groups, number of sellable items, variant rules, languages, markets and content owners. Include current site limitations and any pages that already attract relevant search traffic. If migrating, provide a sample export and a list of integrations, not just a catalog total.
Write requirements as outcomes
For checkout, describe a successful order, failed payment, refund and shipping exception. For operations, say who will update stock, promotions and product information. For marketing, define analytics events, landing-page needs and the level of editorial control. Invite the agency to propose implementation options rather than prescribing a platform without evidence.
Agree on acceptance and handover
List the tests that prove the work is complete: sample imports, redirects, cross-device checkout, email confirmation, staff access and training. Assign an owner to each decision. Megvi’s Fyonka case confirms a large variation migration and staff training, showing why data and handover belong in the brief.
Worked decision example
Illustrative brief excerpt: “We sell 1,500 SKUs with size and color variations; some items require special delivery. Staff must update stock without developer support. A guest order, failed payment and refund must be tested before handover.” This is more useful than “modern store with fast checkout” because it exposes catalog, operations and acceptance work. Add actual sample products and a redacted export when requesting a quote, so agencies price the same problem.
Practical review checklist
- Is a sample of the hardest product type attached?
- Are integrations described as workflows?
- Who approves checkout and handover tests?
