Bulk editing is safer than reimporting a catalog when the change is narrow and the platform can update exactly those fields. Reimporting is appropriate for controlled, mapped changes across many records, but it can overwrite identifiers or variant relationships if the file is wrong.
Decision framework
| Decision | Practical check |
|---|---|
| Define the change | List affected SKUs and fields, then freeze a source export. |
| Choose the method | Use an in-platform bulk editor for small field changes; use a tested import for repeatable large updates. |
| Protect keys | Keep stable handles, SKUs, variant IDs and relationships where integrations depend on them. |
| Pilot first | Change a small sample and compare product pages, stock and feeds before applying the full batch. |
How to use the result
Use the editor for a narrow, reversible field change. Use an import when the mapping is repeatable and a pilot can prove that keys, variants and integrations survive. Record the source export, exact column changes and the person allowed to run the full batch. If the team cannot explain how to undo an error, the import is not ready for production.
Worked example
Illustrative apparel store: 30 products need a material description correction. Bulk edit is likely enough. If 2,000 products need new structured attributes from a supplier feed, a controlled import may be efficient, but test five parent products with variants and linked images first.
What can change the decision
Shopify warns that CSV changes to option values can replace variant IDs and disrupt integrations. Back up the export and inspect platform-specific overwrite behavior before importing.
Review checklist
Compare before and after exports for sampled products, including variant IDs, prices, inventory, metafields and image order. Keep the import file and reversal plan.
Common question
Is CSV always faster?
No. Preparation, validation and rollback can outweigh the time saved on a small edit.

Recurring product-data errors may point to a broader source-of-truth problem: When a Store Needs a Product Information Management System. For help applying this to a live UAE business, see Megvi’s ecommerce website service. Bring the existing store or campaign record and the decision you want to make.
