Redirect chains accumulate when each site migration points to the previous version instead of the final destination. A chain may still work in a browser, but it makes link maintenance, analytics and crawling harder to reason about.
Work through the decision
Use a small, dated sample before applying the method across a whole site or team. Record the exact input and intended outcome so another reviewer can reproduce the decision. The example below illustrates the method; it is not a claimed Megvi client result.
| Step | Practical check |
|---|---|
| Collect starting URLs | Include old campaign URLs, top linked pages, sitemap entries and a sample of internal links. |
| Follow every hop | Record status, Location header, protocol, host and final response for each URL. |
| Decide the final page | Choose the closest useful replacement; do not send unrelated retired content to a generic category. |
| Update at the source | Point internal links and sitemap entries directly at the final canonical URL, then simplify redirect rules. |
Worked example
Illustrative chain: /shop/ → /store/ → /online-store/ → /ecommerce/. If /ecommerce/ is the intended live service, update internal links to it and make each historical URL resolve directly there. For a discontinued product without an equivalent item, a useful category link on a true 404 page may be more honest than forcing a redirect.
When this approach can fail
Before removing a redirect, check external links and campaigns that still use the old URL. Changing a rule without inventory can break valuable entry points.
Verification checklist
Test the start URL, every intermediate URL and final page on desktop and mobile. Confirm no loops, wrong host, mixed protocol or unexpected 200 error page.
Next step
After simplifying a chain, make both slash forms consistent using Trailing Slash Inconsistencies: When They Need Attention. To apply this to a live business, review Megvi’s SEO services and bring the current page, report or workflow plus the result you want to verify.
