Handling Product URLs That Have No Replacement After Migration

A discontinued product URL needs a decision based on what a visitor can do next. Redirecting every unavailable product to the homepage creates a poor experience. Keeping an empty product page live can be equally misleading. Map each old URL to a genuinely useful destination or return an honest not-found response.

How to make the decision

Export old product URLs with traffic, backlinks, sales history, replacement SKU and current stock status. For a true successor, use a direct permanent redirect to that product and explain differences on the destination. For a discontinued item with valuable information or compatible alternatives, a maintained page can state its status and link to those options. If nothing relevant remains, return 404 or 410 and update internal links. Check status codes and final destinations; Google recommends mapping old URLs to appropriate new ones and avoiding redirect chains during site moves.

Worked example

Synthetic appliance store retires three models. Model A has a direct equivalent, so its URL redirects to the replacement page. Model B has no exact successor but its old page still answers warranty and compatibility questions; the page stays live with a clear discontinued notice and links to two suitable alternatives. Model C has no useful information or replacement; it returns 404 and is removed from menus and feeds. The team tests each URL as a customer and in a crawl.

What to verify

  • Is the successor materially equivalent?
  • Does the final URL resolve without chains?
  • Have internal links and sitemaps been updated?
  • Is an unavailable item clearly labeled?

Limits and ownership

Do not redirect unrelated products to a broad category just to preserve a URL count. Review actual intent and customer expectations before choosing the destination.

What to hand over

Save a URL decision log with the old address, chosen response, destination if any, reason and test result. Review it against the source sitemap and internal links. After launch, examine real 404 reports for unexpected demand, but do not turn every missing URL into a homepage redirect.

Common question

Is a 404 always bad for SEO?

No. For a genuinely removed page without a suitable replacement, an honest not-found response can be the correct outcome.

Next useful step

Use Testing Tracking Across Old and New Store Domains for the adjacent decision. For an implementation review, see Megvi’s ecommerce website development service and bring the source records, proposed checks and open exceptions.

Source checked 28 October 2026: Google Search Central: site moves with URL changes. Check current platform settings before changing a live store or report.

The worked example is illustrative and is not presented as a Megvi client outcome.
