Creating a Content Brief That Defines What to Leave Out

A content brief becomes useful when it defines the question the page owns and the nearby questions it will leave to other pages. Exclusions protect the reader from a wandering article and protect the site from repeated answers. The brief should also name the evidence required to publish.

Decision checklist

Checks before acting
Step Practical check
Set one reader task Write the decision the visitor needs to make.
Name adjacent owners List existing pages that answer neighboring questions.
Define exclusions State which terms, comparisons and claims belong elsewhere.
Set acceptance checks Require an original example, source dates and a useful link route.

How to apply it

Begin with the intended query and a representative result page, then read the closest existing Megvi articles. Write the brief as an answer contract: opening answer, required inputs, example, limits, service route and what is outside scope. Put the excluded topics beside their owning URLs so an editor can link rather than repeat. During review, remove paragraphs that answer a different search purpose or expand the page only when the reader truly needs the detail.

Worked example

Synthetic B2B brief asks how to compare two agency proposals. It includes a table for scope, ownership, proof and reporting. It explicitly excludes a general guide to SEO pricing and a full CRM procurement framework, each assigned to a different page. The editor rejects an unsupported “best agency” claim and adds one anonymized, labeled proposal example before approval.

Limits to keep in mind

An exclusion is not a ban on context. Give a short explanation and a descriptive link when a reader needs a neighboring topic to complete the task.

Review checklist

  • Is one page accountable for the main answer?
  • Do exclusions name the neighboring URL?
  • Is there a specific evidence item and reviewer?

Common question

How many keywords should a brief target?

Group close variants of one purpose; split genuinely different decisions into separate pages only when each can stand on its own.

Next useful step

A brief should name who has the expertise to review it: Writing Author Bios That Reflect Real Expertise. To discuss the specific business decision, see Megvi’s SEO service and bring the source records for review.

Worked examples are synthetic or illustrative unless a public case is explicitly named; they are not claimed Megvi client outcomes.
