Use x-default when a set of localized pages needs a deliberate fallback for visitors whose language or region is not represented. The fallback should be a useful live page, often a language or country chooser. It is not a substitute for a missing translation, and it does not force Google to show a particular result.
Decision checklist
| Step | Practical check |
|---|---|
| List the variants | Record each live localized URL and its language-region code. |
| Choose the fallback | Select the page a visitor outside those variants can actually use. |
| Annotate the full set | Include each page itself, every alternate and x-default on every member. |
| Test the destination | Check the fallback returns 200, is usable on mobile and does not redirect unpredictably. |
How to apply it
Make a URL matrix before editing templates. Put the canonical, status and alternate set beside each page. A region selector can be the fallback if it lets visitors choose without forcing them back to a single market. Add x-default in the same supported implementation method as the rest of the set. Test the rendered output, since a CMS setting can differ from the served HTML. Recheck after a new locale launches or a selector URL changes.
Worked example
Synthetic three-page test: example.com/en-ae/ serves UAE English, /ar-ae/ serves UAE Arabic, and /choose-region/ is a selector. Both localized pages list themselves, each other and the selector as x-default. The first test fails because the selector redirects all visitors to /en-ae/. The team fixes the redirect and retests the full set. This is a sample annotation test, not a deployed Megvi client result.
Limits to keep in mind
A page should not claim a locale it does not serve. If there is no useful fallback page, do not invent one simply to fill an annotation. Google says x-default is intended for unmatched languages and works especially well for selector pages.
Review checklist
- Does the fallback answer what an unmatched visitor should do?
- Does every URL return the expected page and canonical?
- Do all live variants carry the matching alternate set?
Common question
Can the English home page be x-default?
It can be if it is the best usable fallback, but a real chooser is often clearer when visitors need a market-specific path.
