A language selector helps shoppers only when each language version has a stable, crawlable URL. A selector that changes text entirely in JavaScript without discoverable links can make localized store pages difficult for search engines to find.
Decision framework
| Decision | Practical check |
|---|---|
| List locale URLs | Map one product and one category page across every supported language. |
| Inspect the selector | Confirm the language options are real links with href values, including on mobile. |
| Check signals | Compare canonical tags, hreflang references and translated content for each URL. |
| Test discovery | Use a crawler and Search Console URL Inspection to see what Google can render and follow. |
How to use the result
The developer should provide a URL map and rendered link sample before launch. The SEO reviewer then checks reciprocal language links, canonicals and content parity on representative product and category pages. A successful UI toggle is not enough if a crawler cannot reach the destination. Include the English and Arabic variants in the same release test so a fix to one does not break the other.
Worked example
Illustrative Shopify store: English product page /en/products/linen-shirt and Arabic /ar/products/linen-shirt have separate URLs. The selector should link between them. If it only changes a cookie while the URL stays the same, the crawler may not discover the second version reliably.
What can change the decision
Do not force all visitors to a locale from IP alone. Google warns that IP-based adaptation can hide variations from its crawler. Keep user choice available.
Review checklist
With JavaScript disabled, inspect the locale links in page HTML. Then test both versions for content, canonical, hreflang and mobile access.
Common question
Does hreflang replace visible language links?
No. Hreflang helps Google understand variants; people and crawlers still need accessible routes to the pages.
