A soft 404 is a page that appears to be missing or empty while the server returns a success response. Treat the Search Console label as a diagnostic starting point: first decide whether the URL should exist, then inspect what a visitor and Google can actually see.
Work through the decision
Use a small, dated sample before applying the method across a whole site or team. Record the exact input and intended outcome so another reviewer can reproduce the decision. The example below illustrates the method; it is not a claimed Megvi client result.
| Step | Practical check |
|---|---|
| Verify the response | Record the HTTP status, final URL, canonical and the rendered main content for an affected URL. |
| Choose the correct state | If content is permanently gone with no replacement, return 404 or 410. If it moved to a true replacement, redirect there. |
| Investigate a false signal | If a useful page is flagged, check missing templates, blocked resources, error text and thin render output. |
| Reinspect after repair | Test the live page, request re-evaluation where appropriate and monitor the indexing report. |
Worked example
Illustrative worksheet: /services/old-offer returns 200 and says “service unavailable”; it should return 404 or point to a genuinely equivalent service. /guides/fit-calculator returns 200 but its JavaScript content fails to load for Google, leaving an empty body; repair rendering rather than redirecting. /services/current has useful content but a prominent “page not found” banner; remove the error state and retest.
When this approach can fail
Do not redirect every retired URL to the home page. That can mislead visitors and obscure the original problem. A soft-404 report can also lag a live fix.
Verification checklist
For three sampled URLs, save the response code, rendered screenshot, intended destination, owner and reinspection date. Could another reviewer reproduce the same decision?
Next step
If the page moved rather than disappeared, check its route with Testing Redirect Chains Before They Become Migration Problems. To apply this to a live business, review Megvi’s SEO services and bring the current page, report or workflow plus the result you want to verify.
