Testing Pagination Discovery in a Large Product Catalog

Pagination is a discovery path through a catalogue, not just a visual control. If products beyond page one appear only after a button click, a crawler may not find them through ordinary links. Test the actual URLs and rendered links before deciding that every product is discoverable.

Map one category from start to finish

Choose a category with enough products to span several pages. Record the first page, a middle page, the last page and three products that appear only deep in the sequence. Open each page as a visitor and inspect the HTML link to the next page. Google’s pagination guidance says its crawlers generally follow URLs in href attributes and do not click buttons that require a user action to expose more items.

Give each pagination page a unique URL. Google advises against making every paginated page canonical to page one; pages in the sequence are separate URLs. Avoid using a fragment such as #page=2 as the only difference, because that does not provide a reliable crawl path. Decide separately how filters and sort orders should be handled so they do not create an uncontrolled set of near-duplicate pages.

Practical test sequence

  1. Load page one and identify a real anchor to page two. Follow it without using site search.
  2. Repeat until the last page. Record any broken link, loop or page number that returns the same products.
  3. Open deep products directly and check that the category links back to them.
  4. Inspect canonical, robots and response status for sample pagination pages.
  5. Compare the discovered products with the catalogue export and sitemap; neither alone proves the sequence works.
  6. Test on mobile and with JavaScript disabled where the site architecture makes that useful.

Illustrative audit: 240 products across 12 pages

Fictional example, not a Megvi site result. A homeware category shows 20 products per page. The mobile interface has a “Load more” button, but no link to page two in its rendered markup. Products on pages 2–12 exist and appear in the sitemap, yet the category itself offers no ordinary crawl path to them. The team adds crawlable page URLs with next-page links while keeping the mobile interaction. It tests products from pages 2, 6 and 12, then checks that each page returns unique items and that product links lead to live pages.

The fix is not to force every page into search results. It is to make important products discoverable and give shoppers a usable path. Some filters or sort permutations may still be kept out of the index. The related faceted navigation guide explains that separate decision.

What to monitor after a change

Check crawl errors, sampled URL Inspection results, and Search Console visibility for deep products over time. Monitor whether internal links and sitemap entries still point to final product URLs. Megvi’s ecommerce SEO service can inspect a representative category and advise on discovery, canonical and filter rules. Bring one large category URL and a product export to the review.

Google Search Central guidance reviewed 19 October 2026. Catalogue example is illustrative.
