Filters help shoppers narrow a catalog, but every combination can also create another URL. The question is not whether filters are useful. It is which combinations deserve a stable search landing page and which should remain a shopping interaction.
Make a URL inventory
Collect a base category, common one-filter URLs and several stacked combinations. For each, note whether the URL can be crawled, whether it has distinct inventory and whether a shopper would search for that exact selection. For example, “red running shoes” may be a meaningful landing page while “red + size 41 + price range + sort newest” is usually a transient state. This is an illustrative example, not a rule for every store.
Choose a small indexable set
Give an indexable filtered page a stable URL, useful product selection, a clear title and content that explains the choice. Link to it with descriptive text from relevant categories. Do not automatically expose every possible parameter combination. Google warns that faceted navigation can create very large URL spaces and slow discovery crawling.
Control the rest deliberately
A canonical, noindex or crawl block solves a different problem; the right choice depends on whether Google needs to access the URL and whether the page is meant to appear in search. Test the actual rendered links and response, then inspect representative URLs in Search Console. Coordinate changes with the store developer so filters still work for people.
Worked decision example
Illustrative matrix: keep the base “running shoes” category indexable. Consider a stable “trail running shoes” landing page if it serves a distinct selection and shopper need. Let size, sort order and temporary price combinations remain browsing states unless evidence supports a specific page. For every candidate, note its search purpose, unique inventory, canonical target and internal link source. Review a few real URLs after implementation, because platform defaults may not match the plan.
Practical review checklist
- Can the candidate page answer a distinct search?
- Does it contain a useful, stable selection of products?
- Are the other combinations handled consistently?
