A useful content map connects each search purpose to the page that can answer it. When two URLs chase the same query with near-identical content, the store can confuse shoppers and its own editorial team. Start with a small product family and a real query set, then expand the map.
Group questions by decision
A category query asks to compare alternatives; a product query asks to verify one item; a guide query may ask how to choose or use it. In Search Console, filter to the target country and inspect both query and page views. Do not infer demand from a single broad keyword or force every question into a blog post.
Assign one intended page
For each query group, record the current ranking page, intended destination and the reason. If a product page appears for a broad category query, ask whether the category is reachable and useful. If two guides answer the same question, decide whether to consolidate or give each a distinct angle before writing another URL.
Connect the route
Add crawlable links from guides to categories and from categories to appropriate products. Use descriptive anchors that tell readers what comes next. Check rendered HTML, not only a draft spreadsheet. Google’s link guidance supports contextual internal links but gives no ideal number to add. Revisit the map after a page update to see which URL actually gains intended visibility.
Worked decision example
Illustrative map: “leather watch straps” belongs to a category with choices; “brown leather strap for model X” may belong to a specific compatible product; “how to measure a watch strap” belongs to a guide. The guide links to the category, and the category presents compatible products. A second generic category page would need its own distinct purpose or should be consolidated.
Practical review checklist
- Does each URL answer one primary search purpose?
- Is the intended page supported by query and page evidence?
- Can a reader move naturally to the next decision?
