Shopify vs WooCommerce for a UAE Store

Shopify or WooCommerce for a UAE online store? Both can support a serious ecommerce business. The better choice depends on your catalog, checkout requirements, team’s technical capacity, and the total work you want to own after launch. This comparison gives you a decision method rather than a universal winner.

The practical difference

Shopify bundles the store platform and hosting in a subscription. WooCommerce is a free, open-source ecommerce platform for WordPress; the merchant chooses hosting and any paid extensions. Shopify’s UAE pricing page and WooCommerce’s pricing explanation describe those models. Check current plan, payment, app, hosting, and developer costs when you compare quotations, because published fees and features can change.

Question Shopify WooCommerce
Who manages hosting? Included with the platform subscription The store owner or service partner chooses and manages a host
How is functionality extended? Platform features, apps, and custom development within Shopify’s model WordPress and WooCommerce settings, extensions, and custom development
What needs budgeting? Subscription, payment processing, apps, design, development, and support Hosting, payment processing, extensions, design, development, maintenance, and support
Who maintains the software stack? Shopify operates the core hosted platform; the merchant still manages store configuration and apps The store owner or partner manages WordPress, WooCommerce, themes, extensions, and hosting

Neither row proves one platform is cheaper. A comparison should use the same catalog, features, support period, and payment assumptions.

Payment and checkout in the UAE

Do not rely on an old statement that Shopify Payments is unavailable in the UAE. Shopify’s current UAE help page says eligible UAE businesses can use it, subject to verification and the payment methods and rates available to their account. Shopify also lists possible third-party transaction fees on its UAE pricing page. WooCommerce lets a store choose a compatible payment processor; processing fees and integration work depend on that provider.

For either option, test a real or controlled checkout path: accepted payment, rejected payment, currency display, tax and delivery charge, order email, refund process, and the purchase event sent to analytics. Confirm provider eligibility and the contract with the provider before promising a particular method to customers.

Catalog and variants: test the difficult product first

A catalog is more than a product count. List the largest product’s option combinations, inventory rules, images, SKU logic, and filters. Shopify’s current variant documentation describes up to 2,048 variants per product and up to three option types in the standard product model. WooCommerce’s variable-product documentation explains variation-level prices, stock, images, and SKU controls. Do not assume a catalog with 6,000 variants has 6,000 variants on one product; those are different constraints.

Megvi’s Fyonka Accessories case reports 6,000 variations across 1,500 SKUs, together with a website revamp and staff training. That is a useful reminder to test data import, product relationships, filters, and the editing workflow before deciding on a platform. The case does not identify a platform winner or provide a general performance benchmark.

Five questions that usually decide the fit

  1. How much control is genuinely needed? Describe custom product, checkout, inventory, or B2B workflows in plain language. Ask both implementers to show how each will work.
  2. Who will maintain the store? Name the person or partner responsible for platform updates, extensions or apps, backups, and support.
  3. What does the full year cost? Compare the build plus the first year’s platform, hosting, app or extension, processor, and support charges on the same scope.
  4. Can the team run the catalog? Import a sample with a difficult product, update stock and images, and time the process. A smooth demo with three simple products is not enough.
  5. Can customers complete the journey? Test mobile navigation, search, checkout, delivery information, and post-purchase emails with realistic UAE addresses and devices.

A simple decision matrix

Give each requirement a priority of must have, important, or nice to have. For each platform, mark whether the requirement works out of the box, needs a paid extension or app, needs custom development, or is unverified. Add the owner and recurring cost. The winning option is the one with fewer unverified must-haves and a support model your team can sustain—not necessarily the lower subscription line.

If you are migrating, add a separate map for product data, order history, customers, and existing URLs. Validate redirects and search visibility as part of the launch plan; do not assume a platform switch preserves rankings automatically.
