An unavailable product is not always a page to delete. The right treatment depends on whether it will return, whether the page still answers a search and whether a genuinely equivalent replacement exists. Preserve a useful path for the shopper while keeping stock signals accurate.
Temporary shortage: keep the answer useful
If the product is expected back, keep the page accessible with honest availability, expected timing only when known, and nearby alternatives. Let the customer subscribe for a restock notice only if that workflow exists. Check that structured data and any merchant feed agree with the visible stock state. Google supports an OutOfStock availability value in product data.
Discontinued item: decide by substitution
If a close successor serves the same need, explain the replacement and consider a redirect after checking page relevance and existing search traffic. If the old page still has unique support value, keep it as a clear archive with a path to current products. Sending every discontinued item to the homepage hides the answer the visitor sought.
Audit the catalog state
Make a table of product URL, stock state, return likelihood, alternative, organic landing-page evidence and proposed action. Test a handful of pages after the change. The goal is a consistent customer experience and a coherent set of indexable pages, not a universal rule for every out-of-stock URL.
Worked decision example
Illustrative product decision: a popular lamp is expected back next month, so its page keeps specifications, an honest unavailable state and links to comparable lamps. A discontinued lamp has a nearly identical successor; the team reviews old traffic and customer support value before choosing a redirect or archive. A third item has no equivalent and no useful remaining content. These cases need different actions despite sharing the same “out of stock” label.
Practical review checklist
- Is the item temporarily unavailable or permanently discontinued?
- Is the proposed replacement genuinely equivalent?
- Do page, structured data and feed availability agree?
