How to Test Search and Filters After a Catalog Import

A catalog import can preserve every product but make them hard to find. Search and filters depend on titles, attributes, categories, synonyms and availability rules. Test actual shopping tasks rather than only checking that the import job completed.

How to make the decision

Choose ten buyer searches from site search logs, customer support questions or known product names. Include spelling variants and a query that should return no product. For each, save the expected result set and the filters a buyer needs. After import, test desktop and mobile search, category navigation, filter combinations, sorting and empty states. Inspect whether variants appear as separate products unexpectedly and whether out-of-stock products are labeled correctly. Record result position only when meaningful; the first goal is that a relevant product is reachable and purchasable.

Worked example

Synthetic homeware store imports 800 products. A search for “ceramic blue bowl” finds the right item, but the color filter lists three shades under “Blue,” “blue” and “BLU.” A 12-product sample shows inconsistent attribute values. The team normalizes the source field, reruns the import and verifies a blue filter plus price range returns six intended products. An empty search now offers category routes instead of a dead page.

What to verify

  • Are common buyer queries covered?
  • Do attributes and filter labels use one vocabulary?
  • Are mobile filters usable?
  • Are empty states and stock status clear?

Limits and ownership

Search behavior varies by theme, app and platform. A passing import schema does not prove the buyer interface works; test the served storefront.

What to hand over

Give the merchandising owner a list of failed search tasks with query, expected products, observed result and field to correct. Retest the same queries after each import change. If the catalog is large, add a small sample from real site-search logs rather than relying only on invented product names.

Common question

Can we test search by checking one product title?

No. Include category, attribute and exception queries so the test reflects how shoppers look for products.

Next useful step

Use Designing a Store Migration Rehearsal Environment for the adjacent decision. For an implementation review, see Megvi’s ecommerce website development service and bring the source records, proposed checks and open exceptions.

Source checked 28 October 2026: WooCommerce: product CSV importer and attributes. Check current platform settings before changing a live store or report.

The worked example is illustrative and is not presented as a Megvi client outcome.
