Moving a store domain can disrupt customer emails even when the site is live. Order confirmations, password resets and support replies may use different systems, DNS records and sending identities. Test each path before changing the public domain.
How to make the decision
Inventory transactional email sources, sender domains, reply-to addresses, mail provider, DNS records and notification templates. Record which system sends order confirmation, shipping updates, refunds, account resets and support replies. Prepare the domain’s mail authentication with the responsible administrator and stage the new templates. During cutover, send controlled test messages to more than one mailbox, inspect headers and delivery, and verify that replies reach a monitored inbox. Keep old-domain forwarding and support access during the transition. Document the owner for bounced or missing messages.
Worked example
Synthetic migration: checkout succeeds and a confirmation appears in the new store admin, but the customer receives no email because the new sender domain was not authorized. The team sends a controlled order, inspects the mail log, applies the approved domain configuration and repeats the test. A support reply then fails because reply-to still points to the old unmonitored inbox. The second correction routes responses to the support team before paid campaigns resume.
What to verify
- Are every transactional message and sender mapped?
- Can customers reply to a monitored address?
- Have delivery and bounce logs been checked?
- Is old-domain forwarding retained during transition?
Limits and ownership
Do not publish DNS values or credentials in the article or a public checklist. Email configuration varies by provider; follow the current vendor instructions and test actual delivery.
What to hand over
Give customer support a temporary message for missing confirmations and the escalation contact. Keep test message IDs and delivery results in the cutover record. If mail fails after launch, the team can identify affected orders and contact those customers without announcing that all notifications succeeded.
Common question
Does a successful checkout prove email works?
No. Order processing and message delivery are separate paths that need their own tests.
