A media coverage report should tell stakeholders what appeared, who it reached, what the message said, and what can actually be measured afterward. Counting clips or estimated audience alone can make a busy campaign look effective without showing a business outcome.
How to make the decision
Set the objective before collecting links. Keep a coverage register with publication, date, URL, format, market, message accuracy, spokesperson, link destination and whether the mention remains live. Separate outputs such as articles from audience response such as enquiries, branded searches or event registrations. Use a fixed observation window and note other campaigns running at the same time. Capture a screenshot or archive reference for coverage that may change. Keep syndicated copies separate from original reporting so one story is not counted as several independent wins.
Worked example
Illustrative UAE launch: one original interview appears in a trade publication and is syndicated to three partner sites. The register records four live URLs but one original story. Two links point to the campaign page, one to the homepage and one has no link. In the following two weeks, the team sees five referral visits and one verified enquiry, but no evidence that the article caused it. The report calls this a relevant coverage output and a possible enquiry signal; it does not multiply readership estimates across syndications.
What to verify
- Are original and syndicated items separated?
- Is message accuracy assessed, not just clip count?
- Are referral visits and verified enquiries reported separately?
- Does each claim have a source and date?
Limits and ownership
A press mention is not a paid placement or proof of sales lift. Do not buy links or present estimated reach as unique readers. Where data is unavailable, say so.
What to hand over
Give the stakeholder a one-page summary and the underlying coverage register. Label each number as an output, audience response or verified business outcome. Keep copies of the original publication and correction requests. When coverage has no measurable response, record the editorial value and the limitation rather than filling the gap with estimated advertising value.
Common question
Should a report include advertising value equivalency?
AMEC recommends evaluation beyond output counts; use outcomes that match the objective rather than a speculative media-value substitute.
