A good product specification turns technical attributes into a buying decision without hiding exact values. Give shoppers the measurement, unit, compatibility condition and consequence of a mismatch. A line of marketing adjectives cannot replace dimensions, power requirements or supported models.
Decision framework
| Step | Practical check |
|---|---|
| List decision attributes | Ask support and returns teams which facts buyers need before purchase. |
| Normalize units | Use consistent units and explain tolerances or measurement method. |
| Explain fit | State compatible models, exclusions and what the customer should verify. |
| Keep data aligned | Check the visible page against stock records and any product feed. |
How to make the decision
Build a two-layer specification: a short plain-language answer above a structured table. Put the buyer question in one column and the exact source value in another. For a technical product, include model number, dimensions, weight, capacity and operating limits only when relevant. Add a photo or diagram showing where to measure. Review the values against manufacturer documentation, then test the page with a nontechnical colleague who has a realistic buying task.
Worked example
Synthetic office-chair listing: “fits most desks” becomes “seat height adjusts from 44 to 54 cm; measure from floor to your current seat and check desk clearance.” The reviewer also notices that the product feed says 48 cm minimum. The item stays unpublished until the supplier confirms the correct range; the page and feed are updated together.
What can change the answer
Do not infer a specification from a photo or copy a competitor’s value. An incorrect fit claim can create returns and trust problems even if the page attracts traffic.
Review checklist
- Can a buyer verify fit with a measurement or model?
- Are units and exceptions clear?
- Do site and feed values agree with a source document?
Common question
Should specifications repeat the product feed?
Use the same verified facts, but explain what each important value means for a person making a purchase.
