When Google selects a different canonical from the URL you prefer, first ask whether the selected page better represents the same content. Canonical signals express a preference; Google can choose differently.
The decision sequence
Begin with a real buyer or team task and keep the relevant source record. The worksheet below is meant to expose a decision that someone can check, rather than replace specialist review or claim a Megvi client result.
| Decision point | What to check |
|---|---|
| Capture both URLs | Record inspected URL, user-declared canonical and Google-selected canonical from URL Inspection. |
| Compare purpose | Check whether the pages are duplicates, near-duplicates or genuinely different answers. |
| Audit signals | Review redirects, canonical tags, sitemap entries, internal links, protocol and locale annotations. |
| Resolve the mismatch | Consolidate duplicates or make distinct pages meaningfully different, then align technical signals and request re-evaluation where useful. |
Worked example
Illustrative comparison: /service/?ref=ad and /service/ show the same service; selecting /service/ is expected. In another case, a detailed migration guide is selected as canonical for a short “migration checklist” page because most text is shared. The editor must decide whether to expand the checklist into a distinct task or merge it into the guide.
What could change the decision
Do not add a self-canonical and assume Google must obey it. Re-evaluation can take time, and the chosen URL may be outside a property you own.
Review before using it
Save the three canonical values, content comparison, technical signals, chosen action and a reinspection date. Check whether Search Console performance is accruing to the selected URL.
Next useful step
If a URL is known but not indexed, follow the diagnostic order in Discovered but Not Indexed: What to Check Before Requesting Indexing. For help with a live implementation, see Megvi’s SEO service. Bring the current page, workflow or evidence record and the decision you need to make.
Platform reference: Google Search Central: Fix canonicalization issues, checked 22 October 2026. Search Console data can lag the live page, so record both the inspection date and the current page state.
